Fuel tax increases in large counties

In Nevada counties with 700,000+ people that adopted the local fuel tax, the law sets how yearly fuel tax hikes take effect. From Jan 1, 2014 to Dec 31, 2026, annual motor fuel and special fuel tax increases happen automatically under the ordinance; the board does not need to act each year. For Jan 1, 2027 to Dec 31, 2036, new annual increases only occur if the county board passed a two‑thirds ordinance by Dec 31, 2026 to allow them. If that ordinance was not adopted, no new annual increases start after Dec 31, 2026, but increases already in place continue while bonds backed by them are unpaid. Starting Jan 1, 2037, further annual increases require voter approval on the Nov 4, 2036 general election ballot; if voters reject it, no new annual increases may start after that date, and prior increases continue while related bonds remain outstanding.
