5 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

More ways to earn time off in prison

For crimes from July 17, 1997 to June 30, 2026 (unless you opt into the new method), the law keeps key credits: 20 days off per month with no serious infractions; up to 10 days per month for work or study; 60 days for a GED, 90 for a high school diploma, and 120 for a first associate degree; and up to 90 days per year for exceptional service. Completing a vocational or other Director‑approved program gives 60 days off the maximum term, plus up to 60 more days for exceptional achievement. During a Governor‑declared disease emergency, you get 5 extra days per month served, up to 60 days. Credits reduce maximum terms and count toward parole; for some serious offenses, credits cannot cut the minimum term by more than 58%.

New 35% sentence credits for prisoners

Beginning July 1, 2026, eligible people in prison get credits equal to 35% of both their minimum and maximum terms. The Director can also grant up to 90 days each year for exceptional meritorious service. These credits count only for time actually in custody; for the maximum term, time in prison, residential confinement, or under Parole and Probation custody counts. Violent or sexual felonies, certain felony DUIs (NRS 484C.110, .120, .130, .430), and category A or B felonies are excluded from the new minimum-term credit. People sentenced for crimes before July 1, 2026 may choose this method once, and the Department must give a written projection comparing credits and release dates before they decide.

More time to use prison IT funds

The state provides $1.44 million to merge sentence management into the offender tracking system. Money cannot be committed after June 30, 2027. Any amount left must return to the State General Fund by September 17, 2027.

Stronger parole programming and credit rules

Starting July 1, 2026, the Department must give each person a list of programs from their risk‑and‑needs check, the programs at their prison, and which ones match. The Parole Board must set rules on how credits are given, taken, and restored. You lose credits if you do not follow required programs or placements identified in your assessment.

When the new credits start

Agencies can start writing rules and preparing now. All other parts of sections 1–10 take effect on July 1, 2026, not 2025.
