Emergency funds keep Nevada prisons running

The law provides about $34 million in extra General Fund money for six state prisons. It covers unanticipated shortfalls for staff pay, utilities, and inmate-driven costs so facilities stay open. Examples: $15.8 million for High Desert, $5.1 million for Southern Desert, and $3.9 million for Ely. These appropriations supplement the 2023 budget.

Medical care and central office funding

The law adds about $8.7 million for prison medical care and the Department of Corrections’ central office. It keeps medical staff and services in place and pays for training, IT, travel, and inmate transport. These funds cover unanticipated shortfalls and support day-to-day operations.

Extra funds for camps and reentry housing

The law adds about $1.9 million to keep conservation camps and Northern Nevada Transitional Housing operating. It pays for staff, utilities, maintenance contracts, and inmate-related costs. Examples: Three Lakes Valley ($876,707), Stewart ($261,455), and Pioche ($250,794). These funds fill shortfalls and keep services running.
