New rules for logging and cutting

Beginning July 1, 2025, timber owners or their agents must get a logging permit from the State Forester Firewarden before any logging or cutting. Apply at the nearest Division of Forestry office. After logging or cutting, owners or operators must sow approved grass seed on skid trails, roads, and landings. Use drill seeding where feasible. Do not seed in wind, on frozen ground, or in other bad conditions. Spread seed evenly at not less than 12 pounds per acre when moisture is favorable. If the land has a timberland conversion certificate, the holder must give a copy to the timber operator before any logging or cutting starts. These are compliance and seeding costs for operators and owners.
