Faster backup funds for water channels

The law keeps the state Account that pays for channel clearance, maintenance, restoration, surveying, and monumenting. The State Engineer runs the Account and can only use it to aid local or tribal governments as state law allows. Starting July 1, 2025, if the Account’s uncommitted balance drops below $500,000 (up from $250,000), the State Engineer may ask for money from the Contingency Account. Only uncommitted money counts toward the $500,000 test. The State Engineer must also request contingency funds when the Account does not have enough to make a grant to a city, county, political subdivision, or tribal government.
