Governor's Technology Office runs state IT

Beginning July 1, 2025, Nevada creates the Governor's Technology Office in the Governor's Office. It takes over the powers and duties of the former Chief Information Officer. The Office includes Client Services, Computing Services, Network Services, and the Office of Information Security, with Network Transport and Unified Communications units. Existing regulations, contracts, and past actions of the former office stay in force. The Deputy Chief of the Office of Information Security is now an unclassified appointment, but anyone in that job on July 1, 2025 stays classified until they leave. Obsolete laws tied to the old structure are repealed.

Public cybersecurity standards and safe testing

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Office of Information Security must publish a public list of the security controls the State follows, aligned with federal, CIS, or NIST standards. The Governor's Technology Office can approve alternative ways to encrypt data under NRS 603A.215 after a well‑founded petition and formal rulemaking. The criminal ban in NRS 205A.4765 does not apply to authorized security testing, including penetration tests, on agency systems that use Governor's Technology Office equipment or services. The testing must be specifically authorized by the Chief or the head of the Office of Information Security.
