Agencies can share info to help victims

Unless federal law stops it, government agencies may share confidential information with the victim center only to provide support services. The center must keep that information confidential. Sharing does not change the information’s confidential status.

Donations for the Victim Support Account

The Administrator may accept gifts, grants, donations, and bequests to support victim services. All money goes to the Victim Support Gift Account in the State General Fund. Interest stays in the account. Unused money does not expire at year end and carries forward.

Statewide help center for violent crime victims

The Division of Child and Family Services designates a statewide center to help victims of violent crime and their dependents. The center operates only when money is available. It is based in a county with 700,000 or more people and must serve victims in that county. When funded, the center gives referrals and case management for medical and mental health care, victim compensation, legal aid, and law enforcement. It helps victims seek reimbursement for eligible out-of-pocket costs and find counseling, support groups, and wellness events. It provides technical help with online applications, runs a call center, and responds to critical incidents. When funding allows, it helps expand services statewide and trains communities to support victims after major events.
