New restricted license for small home jobs

Nevada creates a restricted contractor license for small home jobs. It only covers remodeling or improvements to existing single-family homes or units in buildings up to three stories above ground and one below, and it cannot increase enclosed space. Each contract is capped at $7,000 including labor and materials, unless the Board sets a higher cap. The Board lists which trades are allowed and must exclude trades that state law bars. Most full-license rules do not apply, except NRS 624.268 and any rules the Board keeps, and the Board must adopt program rules by January 1, 2027.

Rules to get and keep this license

To get the license, you must have at least two years of trade experience or a Board-approved equivalent. You must also finish a business counseling course within the year before you apply. Before the Board issues the license, you must file a surety bond or cash deposit of at least $2,000; the Board sets the exact amount. The license lasts two years and can be renewed under Board rules. After holding it for two years with no open or unresolved complaints, you may apply for a full contractor license.

Lower paperwork and fee caps for applicants

The Board cannot require CPA-prepared financial statements to get or renew this restricted license. Application and license fees must be reasonable and cannot be higher than the amounts in NRS 624.280. This lowers paperwork and helps keep costs down for small applicants.
