Limits on child welfare caseworker caseloads

Beginning July 1, 2026, agencies must limit each permanency caseworker to 30 children who are in agency custody. The cap counts only children in custody, not children under investigation or otherwise not in custody. Siblings in custody may share the same worker even if this goes over 30. In emergencies, a worker may carry more than 30 for up to 30 days if the agency’s policy allows it. The law defines permanency services as meeting a child’s health, education, and safety needs and working toward a permanent home.

Local governments can cover added costs

Starting July 1, 2026, NRS 354.599 does not apply to extra local government costs caused by this law. The exemption covers only added expenses tied to carrying out this act.
