Medical respite care for homeless Medicaid members

Beginning July 1, 2027, Nevada Medicaid covers medical respite care for people experiencing homelessness when federal funding is available. You can get up to 90 days in any 12-month period. Covered services include case management, care coordination, behavioral health help, and medication storage and management. You also get meals and housing supports, acute and post-acute care, wound care, rides to appointments, quick help for medical and social needs, and substance use care and education. A person “experiencing homelessness” includes someone who is transient, at imminent risk, or homeless.

Federal OK and start date for coverage

The Medicaid agency must apply for any federal waiver or State Plan change needed to get funding for medical respite care. Agencies can start writing rules and doing prep work now. Full coverage and the Director’s oversight duties take effect July 1, 2027.

24/7 staffing and training at respite sites

State health agencies set a model for medical respite care that tracks national standards when allowed by law. Facilities that want Medicaid payment must follow this model. They must have qualified health staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Staff must be trained in trauma-informed care, de-escalation, and mental health first aid, including recognizing and responding to mental illness and substance use. These rules improve safety and consistency but add staffing and training duties for providers.
