More help for families of crime victims

Beginning July 1, 2025, dependents of a victim who dies can receive payments from the crime victims compensation program. A minor who lives with or is an immediate family member of a domestic violence victim can get a paid assessment or counseling. A member of a murder victim’s household or immediate family can get paid counseling for trauma. The law does not set dollar amounts; a compensation officer approves payments.

No-cost exams after sexual assault or strangulation

Beginning July 1, 2025, victims of sexual assault or domestic violence strangulation do not get billed for forensic exams. The Victim Compensation Fund pays first; if it has no money, the county where the crime happened pays. The Department of Health and Human Services sets a yearly maximum rate that providers can be paid for these exams. You can get these exams without filing a police report. For sexual assault, the county also pays for treatment of physical injuries provided within 72 hours of arrival for care. Forensic exam costs are kept separate from other medical treatment costs in state law. A compensation officer can order payment directly to medical providers. Evidence from exams paid by nonprofits can still be used in court.
