Higher survivor benefits for public employee families

Beginning July 1, 2026, New York increases the Special Accidental Death Benefit. It applies to survivors of covered public employees and retirees, including several NYC agencies named in law. A spouse, children under 18, or children under 23 if a student can receive it. If there is no spouse or eligible child, the parents may receive it. The one-time payment adds an extra percent of the member’s salary based on the calendar year of death. The new schedule raises the multipliers for deaths before 2026 (for example, 325.6% for 1977-or-earlier; 3.0% for 2025). The 2026 line is 0.0%.
