Hospital patients get donor signup portals

Electronic health record vendors serving New York general hospitals must provide patient portals for organ, eye, and tissue donor registration. These portals send registrations directly to the New York State Donate Life Registry immediately upon signup. Vendors must provide this feature at no extra cost to healthcare providers and cannot store patients’ donor status. The state health commissioner sets standards, including a standard signup question, required information, and privacy safeguards.

Insured people get another donor signup option

Covered accident and health insurers can offer donor registration through online member portals. Insured people and applicants can indicate their choice during enrollment, renewal, or first-time portal setup. This route does not apply to Medicaid and generally excludes renewals through NY State of Health.
