Sign up in your patient portal

The law requires EHR systems used by general hospitals to let you join the Donate Life Registry through your patient portal. Vendors must add this feature at no extra cost. The Health Commissioner sets the rules, including a standard question and required data fields. EHRs that offer this must not store your donor status. The portal gives you a direct, private way to register.

When these donor options take effect

Most changes take effect two years after this law becomes law. Donor sign-ups made through EHRs are effective right away and are sent to the Donate Life Registry now. The Health Commissioner can act now to set this up. Some sections also take effect on the same date as related 2024 Donate Life amendments.

More ways to register as a donor

You can choose to be an organ donor when you enroll, renew, or set up your online member portal with your health insurer. This does not apply to renewals done through NY State of Health and does not cover the state medical assistance program. People age 16 or 17 can also register. The Health Department must offer sign-up for them through all listed methods.
