Food businesses must label major allergens

Food establishments must put a written allergen notice on each prepackaged food, on the package or an attached label. The label must list any major food allergen: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, wheat, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, and ingredients with protein from those foods. It applies only to food prepared, prepacked, and sold on the same premises, like delis, bakeries, sandwich shops, ice cream parlors, cafeterias, food trucks, and retail food stores. It does not cover unpackaged items or foods packaged after you order. Labels do not need to list highly refined oils from those foods or ingredients exempt under federal law, or any ingredient that is not a major allergen. The law takes effect one year after it becomes law.
