Higher fines for cooling-tower violations

Breaking these cooling-tower rules can bring fines. A first violation is up to $2,500. A second or later violation is up to $7,000. If a violation leads to a death or serious injury, the fine is up to $12,500.

Faster cleanup and alerts for cooling towers

When tests show a maintenance problem, owners must clean and disinfect the cooling tower within 48 hours under health department rules. When tests show a serious health threat, owners must notify the health department and clean and disinfect, including an extra biocide dose, within 24 hours. These deadlines start when the owner knows or should know the results.

Cooling tower owners: biannual filings, 10-year records

Owners or operators must file certifications in January and July. Each filing confirms the tower was inspected, tested, cleaned, and disinfected, and that a maintenance plan is in place. The health department emails a reminder at least 30 days before each due date. Owners must keep inspection and test records for at least 10 years and keep the maintenance plan on site. You must give these records to the health department right away when asked.
