Schools share water safety information with families

The law takes effect July 1, 2026. New York school districts must give parents or guardians water-safety information at the start of the 2026–2027 school year. In each later school year, districts must provide it when students enroll. Students age 18 or older receive the information themselves. It covers drowning prevention, water safety, and safe and healthy swimming. Districts can send it electronically or on paper and must post it clearly and accessibly on their websites. Parents or guardians can request translations into any of 12 leading non-English languages spoken by New Yorkers with limited English skills. The language list uses the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data. The state health commissioner must produce, update annually, and supply the information to districts, working with another state commissioner.
