Pharmacy technicians can work in any pharmacy
Effective immediately upon enactment, registered pharmacy technicians can work in any New York pharmacy, not just certain health facilities’ pharmacies. They must work under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist employed there. They can help mix, prepare, label, or dispense drugs for valid prescriptions or medication orders. They can also mix, prepare, and label drugs ahead of an expected valid prescription or order for a pharmacy patient. These tasks cannot require professional judgment; that remains the pharmacist’s job. The pharmacy or facility must ensure proper training before technicians begin helping. The pharmacist must give instructions directly, authorize and evaluate procedures, stay in the immediate area, and approve all work before dispensing.
