New limits and remote supervision for physical therapist assistants

Beginning one year after this act becomes law, physical therapist assistants work under continuous supervision by a licensed physical therapist. The therapist does not need to be on site, but must be available to consult with the assistant or patient within a reasonable time set by the Commissioner. Assistants cannot evaluate or test patients, interpret results, or plan or change a plan of care.

Staffing cap for therapist assistants, hospital exception

Beginning one year after this act becomes law, one physical therapist may supervise no more than four assistants, with details set by the Commissioner’s rules. Hospitals may employ assistants and name supervising therapists. The 4-to-1 limit does not apply in hospitals when supervision is adequate for patient health and safety.
