Licensed gun dealers and gunsmiths must post suicide-risk warnings where rifles, shotguns, or firearms are sold. A sign must be at the entrance and in at least one sales area. Each sign is at least 8.5 by 11 inches, bold, and at least 26-point type. The warning includes safety risks and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Dealers must also give every buyer a printed warning at each sale in the same format. Not posting or giving the notice can bring up to 15 days in jail, a fine up to $1,000, or both. Each day you stay out of compliance counts as a separate offense.
When a rifle, shotgun, or firearm license or permit is issued or changed, the licensing officer gives the person a written warning. The notice is at least 8.5 by 11 inches, bold, and at least 26-point type, and includes 988. Licensing officers and local governments are not liable for harms tied to a dealer’s failure to follow these warning rules or for enforcement choices. Local governments can keep or pass stricter warning or notice rules. These state notices are in addition to any other required notices.
