Gun sellers must give safety warnings

New York extends required safety warnings to rifles and shotguns, alongside firearms. Dealers and gunsmiths must post warnings wherever these weapons are sold, displayed, or delivered to buyers. Signs must be clearly visible at the entrance and in at least one other sales area. Dealers must give each buyer a printed warning at every sale. Licensing officers must give a written copy when issuing or changing a related license or permit. The warning says home access significantly increases suicide risk, deaths during domestic disputes, and accidental deaths involving children and others. It must include 988, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number. Notices must use bold type of at least 26 points on paper or signs at least 8.5 by 11 inches. Failure to post or distribute warnings as required carries up to 15 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. Each day of noncompliance is a separate offense. Licensing officers, local governments, and their employees are immune from liability for harm from seller noncompliance or government implementation and enforcement. This protection does not excuse dealers from penalties. The warnings supplement other required notices, and stricter local rules remain in place. The law takes effect with the referenced 2024 dealer-warning amendments; no separate calendar date is given.
