Fire insurance taxes flow to association

Beginning January 1, 2026, the association collects foreign fire insurance taxes on policies covering property in the West Islip protection area. It also receives a share of a related tax based on business written there. An officer named in its bylaws collects the money and must follow insurance law rules for treasurers. All tax money must be used only to help members and families as the law allows.

New name and membership for West Islip firefighters group

The law renames the group the "West Islip Exempt Firefighter's Benevolent Association" and keeps it as a nonprofit. Eligible members are volunteer firefighters in the West Islip fire district or any fire company in the district, and local residents who are exempt volunteer firefighters under state law. To join, you must notify the department secretary in writing before the organization meeting or attend that meeting. People expelled for cause from any fire company cannot join. Membership for a person who is not an exempt firefighter ends if they move out of the protected area or that area loses coverage. The association’s purpose is to aid disabled, injured, or indigent volunteer members and their families, support members’ health and safety, keep a headquarters, and promote the volunteer fire service.
