Optional accident insurance for rentals and car-sharing

Rental car companies and peer‑to‑peer car‑sharing programs can sell optional accident and medical coverage as agents for insurers. The coverage is extra on top of New York’s standard no‑fault first‑party benefits. It only applies to accidents during your rental or car‑sharing period. The insurance superintendent can approve other meaningful coverages for rentals and sharing. The law takes effect on the same date and in the same manner as the 2025 law that requires car‑sharing programs to provide certain insurance.
