The law creates a not-for-profit group to help indigent, disabled, or injured Harris Hill volunteer firefighters and their families. Eligible members are people who are, were, or become active volunteers and have exempt firefighter status through Harris Hill service. Paid firefighters cannot join, and membership ends when someone leaves active service before completing five years. Members adopt by-laws and elect officers; at least seven trustees govern the group’s money and property.
Starting January 1, 2027, the association receives all of one fire insurance tax and a share of another. The taxes apply to premiums for property in the Harris Hill service area or territory where the company must provide fire protection. The association must use the money only for its stated purposes; the law does not specify the amount.
The association must get written government approval before establishing or maintaining a home or institution that would need approval if separately incorporated.
