Oklahoma expands drone infrastructure and state partnerships

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma's aerospace department must develop and carry out the state's drone and advanced air mobility strategy. As funds allow, it can build a statewide detection network and statewide or regional command, control, and radar centers. These systems support safe integration, testing, and development, alone or with federal, state, local, tribal, or nonprofit partners. The law also adds federal entities as partners for investing in and operating infrastructure for integration, testing, and development. It provides no specific funding amount or direct household payment.

New construction permits near public landing sites

Beginning November 1, 2025, qualifying construction near publicly owned or operated heliports and vertiports requires a permit. Structures must exceed federal obstruction standards, be in an airport hazard area, and be within 1 nautical mile of the site's center. Owners apply to the local airport zoning authority, or the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics when none exists. Projects with FCC construction permits issued before May 20, 1975, are exempt. Qualifying existing or previously approved structures, including necessary replacements or repairs, remain exempt when height and location stay unchanged. Permit decisions also account for landing facilities planned in the Oklahoma Airport System Plan. These rules protect aviation safety but can add permit delays and construction costs.
