Free monthly books for Oregon kids

Eligible Oregon children from birth to age five get one free, age-appropriate book each month when enrolled. Families pay nothing for the books or mailing. The program promotes early reading and school readiness.

Nonprofit runs kids' book program; state pays up to half

The Department hires a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit to run the program and make it available to all eligible children across Oregon. The nonprofit pays a national partner for wholesale books and mailing, promotes enrollment, and raises private funds. Each fiscal year, state money may cover no more than 50% of book and mailing costs; other funds must fill the rest. A dedicated account holds appropriations, donations, and interest, and the Early Learning Council can set rules with the Department.
