Safer workplaces for behavioral health staff

Behavioral health employers with an Oregon Health Authority contract must keep a written worker-safety plan. It must include protections for lone workers. It must explain how to report building or security hazards and how fast the employer will respond. It must list required safety training, when new hires get it, and how often refreshers happen. The policy must fit the workplace and be easy for staff to access. New hires receive a copy at onboarding. Requirements take effect starting July 1, 2027, with timing based on each employer’s Oregon Health Authority contract status.

When safety rules start for behavioral health contractors

The law takes effect July 1, 2027. If you had no Oregon Health Authority (OHA) contract that day, the safety rules start when you first sign one. If you had an OHA contract in effect that day, rules start on the first renewal, extension, or amendment after it expires. From that start date, you must follow the safety‑policy requirements.
