Landlords must keep most of your private information confidential. This covers your birth date, Social Security or ITIN, phone, email, bank or tax records, W‑2s, income sources, employer info, immigration or protected‑class status, medical or disability records, and records about asserting housing or VAWA rights. A landlord may share only in narrow cases: your separate written consent; a court order or judicial warrant or subpoena (not an administrative one); affordable‑housing compliance; applicant screening checks; sharing your phone or email to arrange repairs or utilities; a reference for a new landlord; or insurance, collections, or legal claims. If a landlord knowingly breaks this rule, you can recover money equal to twice your monthly rent for that home. The law takes effect on the 91st day after the 2026 regular session ends.
