The law adds telecommunications providers to Oregon’s first-degree criminal mischief law. Intentionally damaging telecom property or service is a Class C felony. This strengthens protection for phone and internet networks.
Law enforcement agencies can register for a free scrap metal theft alert system. They can report metal thefts that happen in their area to that system. The Oregon Department of Justice can adopt rules for equivalent systems.
Scrap metal businesses must sign up for an approved theft alert system. They must download alerts, use them when buying metal, and keep each alert for at least 90 days. A business that is not in compliance cannot do transactions with individuals. These rules aim to block sales of stolen metal.
