Criminal penalties for false emergency calls

The law makes it a crime to knowingly send a false emergency report to police, fire, or other responders. In most cases, it is a Class A misdemeanor. It is a Class C felony if you intentionally cause an enhanced police response and that response recklessly causes serious injury or death. Courts must order people convicted to repay the response and investigation costs. If a SWAT team or similar unit is deployed, the judge must impose at least 10 days in jail, or at least 30 days if someone is seriously hurt or killed. An enhanced response means two or more officers or units plus at least one of: specialized teams, a perimeter or evacuation, special equipment like armored vehicles or aircraft, or emergency steps like shelter-in-place. The state criminal justice commission classifies that felony as a person felony.
