Oregon exempts qualifying residential training homes and adult foster homes from building-code requirements to install automatic sprinklers. Homes must be detached, single-family dwellings operated under a license issued before July 1, 2028. Operators must be licensed to serve five or fewer people in the home. Both operators and homes must meet all other fire, life, and safety rules set by Oregon’s human services or health agencies. Operators can avoid installation costs, but residents may have less sprinkler protection. The law takes effect on passage, and the exemption ends January 2, 2029.
