More protections for veterans seeking benefits

The law bars payment for covered veterans’ claims help and bars referrals and promises of guaranteed benefits or amounts. For Oregon benefits under chapters 407 or 408, these restrictions apply when claimants qualify for free state-authorized help. Excessive or unreasonable fees are banned even when free help is unavailable. Any covered paid service requires written terms signed by everyone and meeting federal agreement rules. Violations are unlawful business practices. Oregon’s veterans agency must share information about free help, including tribal and county service officers, their locations, and their services.
