More meat donation options for charities

Oregon’s agriculture department must adopt rules allowing qualifying meat and poultry donations to charities, low-income food centers, and other noncommercial food providers. Eligible sources include federally inspected meat processed by licensed slaughter operators and meat from a federally approved state inspection program. Meat processed or slaughtered at custom establishments under Oregon’s custom processing and slaughter laws also qualifies.

Oregon authorizes meat inspections and business fees

Oregon’s agriculture department can set up state inspection programs covering cattle, sheep, poultry, and other species. The cattle, sheep, and poultry program requires full federal approval before Oregon can run or enforce it. Program standards must meet or exceed federal meat safety, poultry safety, and humane slaughter standards. Within these programs, the department must inspect products and can set business license requirements and fees. Oregon cannot establish or run a state meat inspection program for horses or other equines.
