Broader powers for Oregon’s Fire Marshal

Oregon’s State Fire Marshal enforces laws and makes rules for laws the department administers. The Marshal or a designated representative can investigate fires, arrange investigations, and classify findings to support fire prevention. The Marshal can buy, dispose of, or contract for supplies, equipment, and vehicles needed for department duties. When the Governor cannot use specified fire-response emergency powers in time, the Marshal can act instead. A chief deputy can act if the Marshal is unavailable; their orders and rules carry the same force as the Governor’s.

State agencies can support reporter safety

Oregon’s State Fire Marshal department and other state wildfire or disaster-response agencies can provide technical help to media associations and public bodies. This help supports safety education for reporters entering wildfire or natural-disaster scenes.
