Cultural support for Puerto Rico’s Tuna groups

The law recognizes Tuna Puertorriqueña musical groups as Puerto Rico’s intangible cultural heritage and supports passing the tradition between generations. It covers male, female, and mixed groups, including students, alumni, former members, and groups without university ties. Culture, tourism, and State Department agencies must promote the tradition and can adopt rules to support that work. Agencies must encourage groups’ participation in official and tourism events in Puerto Rico, the United States, and other countries. These activities must help showcase Puerto Rico’s culture. The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture can seek donations, combine available funds with public or private contributions, and make partnerships. The law provides no specific new funding or guaranteed payments and took effect immediately upon approval.
