Stronger anti-hazing rules for school sports

The law sets a zero-tolerance anti-hazing policy for school sports. The education department and the Rhode Island Interscholastic League establish it for all RIIL schools. It defines hazing, including humiliating, degrading, abusive, or dangerous acts, and says consent is not a defense. Penalties are clear and consistent and can include suspending players or canceling a team’s season. Schools include education and prevention tied to anti-bullying and anti-hate efforts. Every student-athlete must sign an acknowledgement before any practice, meeting, game, or event. This law takes effect upon passage.
