Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Live video care with Rhode Island vets

The law lets vets form a care relationship with you by live video. A vet can learn about your animal by video, not just in person. Only Rhode Island‑licensed vets can do telemedicine, and they must get your verbal consent. They must keep telehealth records and consent for at least one year. Tele-vet care must meet the same standard as in‑person care, and vets must only provide services allowed under Rhode Island scope‑of‑practice rules.

Tele-vet sites must show prices

Veterinary telemedicine providers must list their services and standard charges on their website. The display must be easy to find and read. This helps you compare prices before a video visit.

Limits on pet meds by telehealth

If a vet prescribes by video, the first fill can be up to 30 days. A vet can renew by video once for up to 30 more days. After one virtual renewal, more refills need an in‑person exam. Controlled drugs need an in‑person exam or a timely visit to where the animals are kept before the vet can prescribe.
