Lawsuits and AG action for AI harms

Beginning January 1, 2027, you can sue in Rhode Island Superior Court if you were physically injured through self-harm, or physically or financially harmed by another person, because an AI companion broke the safety-protocol or notice rules. You can seek money damages, court orders, and other relief. The Rhode Island Attorney General can also investigate and sue noncompliant operators and ask courts to stop them, including using deceptive trade practices law.

Safety rules and warnings for AI companions

Beginning January 1, 2027, AI companion operators must build in safety steps. They must respond when a user expresses suicidal thoughts, threats of physical harm to others, or plans for financial harm. The protocol must refer the user to crisis services like a hotline or text line. Operators must also notify users at the start of any chat, and at least every three hours in long chats, that the AI is a computer program and not a human, and it cannot feel human emotion. The notice can be spoken or shown in bold, all-caps text of at least 16-point size.
