Write-in ballot images and totals online

The law requires the State Board of Elections to post images of every write-in vote for each office on its website. It must also post the total number of write-in votes for each office. Scanned images of ballots that contain irregular ballots are saved by the precinct scanners and posted online. The Board also publishes the results of local reviews of write-in votes.

Write-ins reviewed in close races

Local election boards must review each write-in vote when the write-in total could change who wins, including within a recount margin. The State Board tells local boards when this review is required. Any write-in candidate gets a review if they filed required campaign finance reports, or took no contributions and spent less than the state’s filing exemption limit. Local boards must report the number of valid write-ins to the State Board using its procedure.
