Interest break on overdue property taxes

Cities and towns can adopt an ordinance to waive interest tied to one quarter’s overdue property tax payment and let you pay the rest quarterly. The waiver cannot exceed $500 per tax bill. It applies only if the property was your main home or your commercial property for the last five years and you paid taxes on time for those five years. The overdue bill must be less than two years old, and you must submit a signed, dated, written request. If you meet the ordinance’s criteria, the city or town grants the waiver. The tax collector’s decision is in writing and sent to the council. If denied, you must pay the interest, but you can file a reimbursement claim with the council within 10 days.
