Rhode Island public workers risk pension loss

The law lets the Rhode Island State Retirement Board reduce or revoke a pension when a public worker commits certain felonies tied to the job. It covers embezzlement of public funds, theft from the employer, bribery, and other felonies done willfully to defraud the public for money or advantage through use of office. It also covers any felony sex offense under chapter 37 if the crime uses the power of the job and is committed on or after July 1, 2026. The rules apply to current and former state and city officials and employees who receive state retirement benefits. Losing a pension can sharply cut retirement income.
