Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Help and limits for stalking victims

The law adds stalking, as defined in state law, to eligible crimes for victim compensation. If you are a stalking victim, you can get emergency help to move or to make reasonable changes to your home under the emergency relocation rule. You cannot get other payments unless you also were the victim of another listed offense. Awards still follow the program’s normal proof and dollar limits.

Faster payments for victim claims

The compensation office must try to pay awards within six months of your application. This speeds up payments, but it is a target, not a guarantee.

Up to $1,500 counseling for young witnesses

If a child witnessed a homicide or a domestic violence incident, the program can pay for counseling. It covers actual, reasonable costs for psychiatric care and mental health counseling, up to $1,500. The office does not pay once the secondary victim is age 18.

No awards for larceny-from-person victims

Victims of larceny from the person are no longer eligible for this compensation program. If that was your crime, you cannot get payments under this law.
