Two-plate rules and fines for vehicles

Most vehicles must display two plates: one in front and one in back. Motorcycles, trailers, transporter or in transit vehicles, bailee vehicles, and dealer cars used in business show a rear plate only. Vehicles in listed classes must display the required plates. If you have an approved alternative-design or other special plate, follow that plate’s display rules. Breaking these rules is a violation and can bring a fine under section 31-41.1-4.7.

No front plate for bracketless cars

Cars sold without a front plate bracket or mount do not need a front plate. You must attach one plate to the rear. You must keep the second plate inside the car and show it to a sworn police officer when asked.
