Firefighters must register with each department

A firefighter who works for more than one department must be registered by each department. The State Fire Marshal registers firefighters after a chief or employer recommends them. The Office keeps, at minimum, the firefighter’s name, birth date, Social Security number, valid driver’s license number, employer, and start date. The Office notifies the chief electronically or in writing, and chiefs must use the Office’s forms. A driver’s license no longer has to be from South Carolina; any valid license is accepted.

Statewide rules for fire departments

The law sets clear, statewide rules to be a recognized fire department. A department must be legally organized, serve a response district, and be created or recognized by a town, county, city, or the State. It must have an ISO Public Protection Classification rating and be dispatched by 911 or a local government dispatch center. By July 1, 2026, the State Fire Marshal verifies each department and issues a South Carolina Fire Department number, and the department must be eligible for a National Emergency Response Information System number. Departments must register and keep a roster with the State Fire Marshal and the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association.
