The law lets the Catawba Nation join South Carolina’s police retirement system. Once the Nation is admitted, its police officers can take part. To be eligible, you must spend substantially all your time on police duties under Section 27-16-70(C). Part-time or mixed-duty staff are not eligible. Effective May 22, 2025; coverage starts on the Nation’s admission date.
The Catawba Nation can apply to join the state police retirement system. The application must follow Section 9-11-40 and board rules, and list the next Jan 1, Apr 1, Jul 1, or Oct 1 after the board receives it. To join, the Nation agrees to follow state laws and plan rules for this system. Disputes about participation are handled in South Carolina state courts or tribunals. The law keeps the Nation’s other sovereign immunity. Effective May 22, 2025.
