Beginning May 8, 2025, South Carolina sets new snapper-grouper limits. Black sea bass: up to 5 fish per person per day or the federal limit, whichever is higher; minimum size is 13 inches total length; no closed season. Red snapper: up to 2 fish per person per day; minimum size is 20 inches total length; no closed season. Other snapper-grouper species: the daily limit is the higher of the 2024-2025 South Carolina Hunting and Fishing Laws and Regulations Guide or the federal limit; the minimum size is the lower of the Guide or the federal size; no closed season.
Beginning May 8, 2025, federal fishing rules are state law in South Carolina. Seasons, fishing periods, gear, sales, bag, size, and possession limits set under federal law apply statewide, including in state waters. This creates one set of rules and clearer enforcement, but it can tighten limits where federal rules are stricter. State exceptions for snapper-grouper species below still apply.
