New red-light and stop-sign rules for cyclists

Beginning May 18, 2026, cyclists have new rules at red lights and stop signs. At a steady red light, you must stop first. After stopping, you may go through if you yield to any immediate hazard. You may turn right on red after slowing and yielding. You may turn left onto a one-way road on red after stopping and yielding. At a stop sign, you must slow down and stop when needed to avoid a hazard. If you slowed enough, you may go through or turn without stopping. You must yield to people in the crosswalk and to other traffic.
