Kingsport picks acting mayor after elections

At the first board meeting after a city general election, the board selects one member to serve as acting mayor. That person acts as mayor when the mayor is absent, unable, or fails to act. If the mayor’s office becomes vacant, the chosen member becomes mayor for the rest of the term. This keeps city leadership running without a gap.
