Required infection screening during pregnancy

Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee pregnancy care providers must arrange blood testing at the first examination or within 10 days. A department-approved lab must test for syphilis, rubella immunity, hepatitis B surface antigen, and hepatitis C antibody. A reactive hepatitis C antibody result automatically triggers an HCV RNA follow-up test. Providers must also arrange syphilis blood tests at 28–32 weeks of pregnancy and at delivery. Repeat rubella-immunity testing in later pregnancies is not required with verified positive immunity results or documented rubella vaccination history. Providers who cannot legally draw blood must ensure a legally permitted health provider takes the sample and has it tested. Positive syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C results must be reported to the local health department under state disease-reporting rules.
