Background checks for released time classes

The law requires safety screening for released time classes. Before a school excuses a student to attend, the outside group must list all instructors and any staff who will be near students. Each person must complete a criminal history background check before the 2025-2026 school year or before starting. Checks must be repeated at least every five years. The group reviews the results and confirms in writing to the local school system that checks were done and that no one has a conviction listed in § 49-5-417(a). These rules take effect July 1, 2025, and apply for the 2025-2026 school year and every year after.
