Farmers gain contract options on historic land

Tennessee local historical boards can offer farmers contracts to grow crops on historic-site land with at least five connected acres. On land with fewer than five connected acres, contracts can cover harvesting hay and other naturally grown soil products. Farmers include people who grow crops or harvest naturally grown soil products for sale or consumption. Boards do not have to offer contracts. Eligible boards are government or nonprofit entities established under state and local law to oversee historic preservation. They receive Tennessee historical commission assistance and operate under local rules adding historic-property protection and design review. Local historic preservation commissions are included. Boards must use all contract proceeds to preserve sites and structures they manage, following applicable state guidelines and federal preservation standards. By December 31 each year, boards must report that calendar year's contracts and how proceeds were used to the Tennessee historical commission. The commission must develop contracts for boards to use. These rules took effect when the act became law.
