Tennessee requires study of crime stoppers

Beginning July 1, 2026, the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) must study Tennessee's crime stoppers programs. It must assess each program's current status, data collection, and reporting strengths and weaknesses. It must review funding sources, funding stability, and fundraising ability, including strengths and weaknesses. It must also review partnerships among crime stoppers groups, local police, and communities. Recommendations must address statewide coordination, accountability, program capacity, public engagement, and more crime tips. They must also address police effectiveness and cost savings, community trust, consistent standards, and best practices. TACIR must recommend a statewide framework for program support and accountability. State and local government entities must provide information or input that TACIR requests as needed. TACIR must use existing resources. After completing the study, it must send findings, recommendations, and any proposed legislation to the Senate judiciary committee chair. It must also send them to the House committee chair responsible for criminal justice and give the legislative librarian a copy. The report can be sent electronically. The law does not directly change household benefits, eligibility, or costs.
